Walking map for one day in Athens
To help those who are more visual, I created a walking map for your day in Athens.
The entire day is walkable. You do not need public transportation unless your legs get tired. If you know Michael and I, we walk EVERYWHERE. It's rare that we take public transportation. We believe that walking is the best way to truly explore a city.
Where to stay
During our stay In Athens, we stayed at THIS airbnb. It's located in Monastiraki which is a perfect location. Also, it was the cheapest airbnb/hotel we've ever stayed in. It was $53 a night. Look at it! You would never expect a place to look like that at $53 a night. If you are going to visit alone or with one other person, this airbnb is perfect.
We found our first stop, The Underdog, near our airbnb. This is why we are starting here the day here.
1. Breakfast - The Underdog
We have a long day with lots and lots of walking. It's important to fuel up with a good breakfast. Head to The Underdog, Iraklidon 8, Athina 118 51, Greece. This place had such a fun vibe and the food was delicious. We ordered a babka, yogurt bowl and cappuccino, of course.
2. Shopping - Thissio flea market
After you fill your belly, take a 5 minute walk over to Thissio flea market, Pl. Agion Asomaton, Athina 118 51, Greece. There are so many amazing street vendors here. I can't even tell you how much jewelry I purchased. I loved all the funky rings and earrings. Everything was super unique and cheap. This is a great place to purchase gifts for loved ones.
3. The main event - Acropolis
The Acropolis is a hill where the Parthenon, Odeon Of Herodes Atticus, Temple Of Athena Nike, Propylaea and other ancient wonders sit on. You can purchase your tickets HERE. I believe we purchased the simple 13 euro tickets called Athens Acropolis & Parthenon with Optional Audio Guide. You can spend lots of time roaming around and taking photos here.
4. Lunch - O Thanasis
I will forever be dreaming about gyros and gyro platters from O Thanasis, Mitropoleos 69, Athina 105 55, Greece. They are just the best. We received this restaurant recommendation from a local so we had high hopes and it didn't disappoint. We tried quite a few places for gyros while we were in the Athens and this place wins every single time. I truly have never had a gyro remotely similar in the United States. Take note, this the place isn't nice looking, but it isn't about the atmosphere. It's just not about being fancy here. It's all about the food.
5. Lunch dessert - LUKUMAΔΕΣ (Lukumades)
Who doesn't love a lunch dessert!? While in Athens, you must try LUKUMAΔΕΣ, Eolou 21, & Aghias Irinis Str, Athina 105 51, Greece. This place has the best lukumades. They are basically like mini donut balls served with honey syrup and cinnamon. This place reinvents them a bit with so many different favors to choose from. You can go more traditional or pick a flavor like Banoffee, Bueno or Double Chocolate Cookies. They also have savory options like the Feta Lover!
Plaka was one of our favorite areas mainly because of the atmosphere and the shopping! You can stroll around there for hours. There were lots of unique stores with different jewelry, trinkets and handmade decor. We purchased this gorgeous handmade olive tree decor piece from a small shop in Plaka that we have in our apartment.
Just above Plaka is an area called Anafiotika that you can't miss! I'm sure you've seen this area on social media. It's one of those "instagrammy" locations because of how beautiful it is. It's a residential area that is colorful and picturesque.
8. The Clumsies
I will admit, we went here 3 times on our trip because it was that good. The Clumsies, Praxitelous 30, Athina 105 61, Greece is a bar that you can't miss! It's rated one of the best bars in the entire world. You must order Popeye & Olive cocktail. It's a mix of gin, spinach, green apple and olive.
9. Dinner - Avli
We finally made it to dinner time. We highly recommend Avli, Ag. Dimitriou 12, Athina 105 54, Greece. This is a traditional Greek taverna that's underground. The atmosphere is like something out of a movie. The floor is stone, the tables are wooden and the tablecloths are plaid. There were also kitties roaming around. We saw lots of locals there as well so we knew it had to be good! We ordered a few dishes and shared. To top it all off, the meal was under 30 euro for two people!
I hope you found this post to be a helpful outline for things to see in Athens in one day! Also, if you are staying in Athens for 2 (or 3) days, you will have no problem staying busy.
We traveled from NYC to Athens which was about a 10 hour flight. If your flight to get to Athens is also long, be sure to pack long flight essentials.
